The first thing to do is check to make sure the iPod is not set to play back at the wrong speed. This setting depends on the version of the iPod you are using. On some versions, you will see an icon under the time-elapsed/time-remaining display. If the icon is 2X, it is playing at double speed. Tap the icon to change the playback speed.
Other iPods have the options for faster, normal, or slower playback from the settings ->audiobook menu.
