How do I know if I have overdue items? Will the library send me a notice?

Answer

The Public Library makes many efforts to keep you informed of the status of your account.

  • When items become 14 days overdue an overdue notice is sent that reminds you to return or renew your items.
  • When items become 28 days overdue a second notice is sent, alerting you that items are significantly overdue. Accounts that reach this level past-due are temporarily suspended, and customers are informed of the replacement costs of all items, in case they are lost. Returning items in good condition clears the account, and allows customers to begin using their cards again.
  • Accounts with items 53 days or more overdue become eligible for listing with a collection agency. Accounts listed with the collection agency are charged a non-refundable processing fee.

It is important to make sure that the Public Library has your correct contact information, so that you receive notices about your library account. Make sure to update your email, telephone, and mailing address with us if there are ever any changes. You can update you email and telephone by visiting your local library branch or calling 505-768-5141 Monday through Saturday between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.. If you need to change you address you will need to visit your local branch with your ID and proof of your new address (can be a piece of mail that you have received recently with your name and new address on it).

Customers who sign up for email notices also receive:

  • courtesy notices three days before items are due
  • detailed title information in hold pickup and the first overdue notice
  • a reminder when their library cards are ready to be renewed.

You can also sign up for SMS text message alerts. To do this, sign into My Account and click on the Personal Information Tab. Click on SMS Notifications at the bottom, and click Add SMS Notification. Label your phone number (example: My Cell Phone), enter your 10 digit phone number, and select your carrier from the dropdown. To the right, you can select which types of text message notices you would like to receive. Then click Save.

The best way to make sure that you don't have overdue library material is to keep track of your account! You can do this by logging into My Account and taking a look at your "Checkouts" tab to look at the "Status." If you do not have access to a computer, you can call (505) 768-5141.
