Does the Public Library have fines for overdue items? What are the fines and how can I avoid them?

Answer

The Public Library does not charge daily overdue fines.

When items become 28 days overdue, the account of the customer who has borrowed them is billed for the overdue item and the account is suspended until the materials are either returned or paid for.

Accounts that are 53 days overdue are eligible for referral to the library's collection agency. These accounts are charged an $10 processing fee and are also billed the for the item(s) that are overdue.

If the overdue items on the account are returned in good condition, the cost for those items will be removed from the account.

To avoid these fines, customers should return or renew borrowed items on time. Borrowed items can be returned to any library, regardless of where they were checked out, and renewals can be done online through My Account, in person at the library, or over the phone at (505)768-5141. Please have your card number handy when you call to renew. You can keep track of your items an their due dates by logging onto My Account and looking under the "Checkouts" tab to the left.
