When I try to download audiobooks with Overdrive Media Console I get the message “Error:0x80070057: The parameter is incorrect." Can you help?
Answer
This can be corrected by resetting the Digital Rights Management (DRM) for Windows Media Player.
Please follow these steps carefully as this is an involved process. The steps vary depending upon which Operating System you use. The steps for Windows 7, VISTA, XP, 2000, 98 and ME are included here.
If you are using Vista or Windows 7 please follow these steps:
1. Open the 'Control Panel'.
2. Open 'Folder Options' and select the 'View' tab.
3. Select 'Show hidden files and folders'.
4. Uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files'.
5. In the warning message you receive, click 'Yes'.
6. Click 'OK'.
7. Close the Control Panel.
8. Click the Start button. In the 'Start Search' box, paste the following:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM
9. Press 'Enter'.
10. Delete ONLY the following 4 files:
blackbox.bin
drmstore.hds
v3ks.bla
v3ks.sec
11. Close this window and open OverDrive Media Console.
12. Go to 'Tools' > 'Windows Media Player Security Upgrade'.
If you use another version of the Windows Operating System follow these steps:
For steps 1-7 please follow the steps from above.
8. Rename the DRM folder to DRM.old.
Depending on your OS, it can be found in different locations:
- Windows 2000 and XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ DRM
- Windows 98: C:\Windows\All Users\DRM
- Windows ME: C:\Windows\DRM
9. Close this window and open OverDrive Media Console.
10. Go to Tools > Windows Media Player Security Upgrade.
(Who knows, possibly because the system had been upgraded from early OS's, and never clean installed.)
*** important to note ***
The 'show hidden OS file & folder' option is DIFFERENT than the regular folder view 'show hidden files & folders' option. I am familiar with the 'show hidden files & folders' option & had it turned on, but I still could not see the DRM folder.
For Windows 7 go to the Start menu -> Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View tab, & then look for a checkbox titled 'Hide protected operating system files (Recommended'). You have to uncheck this, then click Yes to confirm you want to change it, and click apply/OK.
Then the DRM folder will be visible.
Thanks so much for posting this!!!
I got stuck because I had selected the wrong option in my folder options.
Everything works great now!
