In order to apply for a library card you do need to visit a branch and fill out an application. Please bring your photo ID, and if your current physical address is not listed on your ID, please also bring a proof of address such as a piece of mail or a utility bill.
The Public Library is required legally to ensure that the patrons we serve live in the state of New Mexico. Our contracts with our electronic resource vendors, such as OverDrive/Libby and Hoopla, state that the services we pay for are intended for New Mexico state residents, whose tax dollars are used to pay for such services. As such, the Library's policy does require patrons to visit one of our 19 library branches and show their photo ID in order to apply for a library card, and to visit a branch at least once every three years with their photo ID to confirm that they still do live in New Mexico.
We do offer a homebound patron service; if you are homebound, please call (505)768-5141 Monday through Friday between 11:00am and 4:00pm and ask for customer services. Thank you.

Please adjust this process! Make it possible to apply for a library card online. My students, and countless other NM residents, WILL get library cards and enjoy the benefits of library membership as soon as ABC-system libraries support online applications for cards. There are many ways to make online processing rigorous and secure. Let's bring the library to everyone.by A Professor Requests on Oct 02, 2022

I agree with the previous comment. Allowing online account registration for eResources would greatly improve the utility and utilization of the resources. Thank you for maintaining the facilities and ebooks.by Phil K on Jul 06, 2023
